Direct from the factory vs a 3D printing marketplace

Updated: 7 hours ago
An online 3D printing marketplace is a platform that prices your file and passes the order to a manufacturing vendor it selects for you. Ordering direct from the factory means the company that quotes your part is the company that prints it, on its own machines. The part can be the same; what changes is who you pay, who is accountable for the result, and who answers when you have a question.
3Descu is a 3D printing manufacturer, not a broker. It is ISO 9001:2015 certified, runs 200+ 3D printers in FDM and resin on one production floor in Targu-Jiu, Romania, and has delivered 1200+ orders since 2022, with customers rating the service 4.7 / 5.
Marketplace vs direct: the comparison
Direct from the factory (3Descu) | Online 3D printing marketplaces | |
Who prints it | 3Descu, on its own machines | A vendor selected for you |
What you pay for | The part | The part, plus the platform's margin |
Price | Up to 40% less than industry platforms* | Marketplace list price |
Who answers a question | The people running the machines | A support queue |
Price in under a minute | Yes | Varies |
*The gap depends on which platform you compare against, and on some it is smaller. Based on like-for-like quotes for the same part, material, infill and quantity, checked September 2026.
Who prints a part you order through a marketplace
On a marketplace, the platform owns the customer relationship and the vendor owns the machines. You upload a file, the platform prices it, and the order goes to a manufacturing partner the platform chooses.
When you order from 3Descu direct, there is one company in the chain. The file is reviewed by the people who will print it, the part is made on 3Descu machines, and the delivery date is a date somebody at 3Descu controls. If a design question comes up, such as which way the load runs, whether a wall is too thin or whether a part should be split, it goes to the person who will set up the job rather than through an intermediary.

What you pay for in each case
A marketplace price covers the part and the platform's own margin on top of the maker's price. That margin pays for the platform's own service, such as one account and one checkout across many vendors and processes, and for a buyer who needs many processes that can be worth paying.
A direct price covers the part. At 3Descu that means the material, machine time on the 200+ printer fleet, quality control under ISO 9001:2015, post-processing and packaging. Shipping is quoted with DPD, GLS, Cargus, FedEx or DHL. For an EU business with a valid VAT number the invoice is reverse charged, so no VAT is added.
Why ordering direct can cost up to 40% less
The saving comes mainly from removing the platform layer between you and the factory. It is not the same everywhere: the range comes from which platform is the comparison, more than from the part itself.
Ordering direct from 3Descu is up to 40% less than industry platforms. The gap depends on which platform you compare against, and on some it is smaller. Based on like-for-like quotes for the same part, material, infill and quantity, checked September 2026.
Two rules make any comparison you run yourself honest:
Compare like for like. Same file, same material, same infill, same quantity, same destination country, and a production speed with a similar lead time. Change any one of them and you are comparing two different orders.
Compare above the minimum order. Most suppliers have one; at 3Descu it is €20 for the whole order. When both sides sit on their minimums, the ratio between them is the ratio of two minimums, not a price difference.
On some orders the 3Descu calculator does this for you. When a live marketplace price for the same configuration can be fetched, the quote summary shows it next to the 3Descu price, so the comparison is made on your part rather than on a claim.
Who answers when something goes wrong
Accountability is the difference buyers notice after the order, not before it. At 3Descu, every quote is read by a person before it is invoiced, and the reply comes the same business day, including a custom material, a custom colour or the White Glove engineering review. After the order, the order portal shows the stage, the configuration as quoted and a message thread with the person handling it.
The guarantee is simple: a part that does not conform to the agreed specification is reprinted free of charge or refunded, under Article 5.5 of the manufacturing contract. Because 3Descu is the manufacturer, there is no marketplace in between to argue with. Photos of your parts at any production stage are available on request, and a QC report is available on request, free on orders over €500. If you need an NDA before sharing a file, 3Descu signs it fast once the text is agreed. The full route is on the 3Descu how it works page.
When a marketplace is still the right choice
Ordering direct is the better route when the factory runs the process you need. 3Descu runs FDM and resin only, by design, across 12 filament materials and 5 resins listed in the 3Descu material range. It does not run SLS, MJF, metal printing or injection moulding. CNC machining is available on request through the 3Descu partner network.
If your part needs one of those, a platform that covers many processes, or a specialist bureau for that process, is the honest answer. The 3Descu page on what we do not print says what to look for instead. For everything that is FDM or resin, the same part can come straight from the machines that make it.
How to try the direct route
The 3Descu calculator needs no account and no sales call. Upload an STL, OBJ, 3MF, STEP or STP file up to 50 MB, choose the material, colour, infill and quantity, and the price appears in under a minute. Nothing is charged until you confirm the order. The difference between that and a classic request for quotation is set out in instant quote vs RFQ.
